Summary
The intern will be responsible for identifying, evaluating & implementing the opportunities for job creation and employment associated with forestland owned by Garibaldi Forest Management LLC in the North Oregon Coast.
Background
Garibaldi Forest Management (GFM) is a subsidiary of Ecotrust Forests LLC (EF), a forestland investment fund in the Pacific Northwest. GFM is actively seeking business opportunities that would increase employment on its forestland near the town of Garibaldi. GFM intends to implement the recommendations that result from this internship in 2012.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Research and identify the different opportunities for job creation in low income communities that can be supported by access to Garibaldi forestland resources, for example, firewood programs, salal harvesting, biomass chipping etc.
- Evaluate the employment generation potential inherent in the different options identified, both in terms of direct employment and indirect employment
- Evaluate the amount of capital investment, labor skills, and management supervision needed to implement the activities, and identify and assess the companies that are active in the sector in the target geographies.
- Assess available labor pools in local communities within the context of business opportunities
- Identify potential partners such as existing organizations, community development groups, programs that might already be in place in the local community
- Recommend implementation steps and path forward for Garibaldi Forest Management.
Qualifications
- Must be either currently pursuing or a recent graduate with degree in business, economic development or natural resources
- Past research or work experience in forestry sector and/or natural resource businesses is highly desirable
- Must demonstrate entrepreneurial ability and an understanding of small business creation in a rural, US context
- Knowledge and familiarity with economic tools that can be used to quantify direct and indirect labor creation is an added bonus
- Interest in conservation and appetite for gaining knowledge about forest management and conservation finance.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team, a self-starter who is resourceful and can deal with data uncertainties.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel
- Valid US Drivers license
Hours & Work Schedule
- Approximately 40 hours/week
- Internship period, June–July for a minimum period of 8 weeks. Dates flexible.
Salary & Benefits
- This internship will include a modest stipend and reimbursement for direct travel expenses. We encourage students to seek on-campus sources of funding for conservation, economic development focused internships.
